Since 2005 The SHARE Institute has been dynamically engaging elementary and middle school aged children in our local community by traveling to various after school programs and hosting interactive workshops geared toward cultural awareness. The main objective of the project is to increase understanding and awareness of the multitude of cultures around the globe. SHARE interns have generously volunteered their time to learn about another culture from around the world, and then pass their knowledge to children giving a presentation on various cultural traits. The presentations often include descriptions of different types of food, clothing, which is often worn by the SHARE interns during their visit to the schools, and information on customs and practices of the culture that is being discussed. The students also learn through hands-on arts and crafts projects, and by singing and dancing to cultural music. This program has been generously funded by several school districts and other after school organizations including the San Juan Unified School District, Bridges After School Program and the Discovery Club, the Grants Advisory Board for Youth (GABY), the Folsom Cordova Unified School District, the Elk Grove Unified School District.
The program has been a wonderful success for The SHARE Institute, thanks to our interns, staff, friends of SHARE, the community and, of course, the sponsors and schools we visit. If you are interested in learning more about this program, participating in this program, or finding out what you can do to help in even a small way please feel free to call The SHARE Institute at (916)-966-7482 or send us an email at sstolba@aol.com.
